Mairai no Matsuri - Festival of the Future

Roppongi Art Night 2017

A few weeks ago I got to attend the 8th edition of Roppongi Art Night, a one-night art extravaganza. One of my favorite things about this show was that the art was not bound by the walls of a gallery; instead, it was featured throughout the district of Roppoingi, making these works part of life. This was a very intentional choice by the festival organizers. The overview stated that one of the purposes of this event was to "celebrate the enjoyment of art in our everyday lives." You couldn't see every work unless you truly wanted to spend the whole night going from piece to piece. There were 78 different exhibitions of work; everything from design, music, film, and performances. It was a perfect combination of everything Tokyo excels at - nightlife, futuristic design, and creativity, so this event was an excellent way to enjoy and learn Tokyo.
